Fasting Therapeutics
Fasting is one of the single most incredible natural healing therapies. It is nature's ancient, universal remedy for many health problems. Animals instinctively fast when ill; humans are noninstinctive when ill, as a rule. Most of the issues for which naturopaths recommend fasting as treatment are ones that result from modern-day living, namely overnutrition, overfed, yet undernourished and obese. Dietary abuse problems, more common in the Western world than in Third World countries, generate many chronic degenerative diseases; these include atherosclerosis, hypertension and heart disease, allergies, diabetes, and cancer. Fasting is therapeutic and preventive for many of these conditions.
Fasting, a simple process of self-cleansing, is inherent in nature. Its straightforward nature makes it a reassuring and confidence-boosting practice.
Assuming the body is well nourished, fasting will begin a detoxification process provided adequate water. The most basic form of fasting is taking only water; more liberally, fasting includes using fresh juices made from fruits and vegetables and herbal teas. All of these limited diets generate varying degrees of detoxification and elimination of toxins from the body. Individual experiences with fasting depend on the body's condition and the mind's attitude, as fasting will generate the most challenging of personal disciplines. Detoxification might be intense and temporarily increase the feeling of sickness or might immediately bring up energy levels and uplift.
Juice fasting is commonly used in practice (rather than water alone) as a more effective cleansing program. It is suggested by naturopathic doctors working in many European Spas and clinics. Fresh juices are easily assimilated and require minimum digestion, while they supply many nutrients to stimulate the body to clear and drain its wastes. Juice fasting is also safer than water fasting because it supports the body nutritionally, stabilizes blood sugar, prevents emotional instability, and generally produces better detoxification and quicker recovery.
As a general rule, vegetable juices tend to be magnetic, drawing poisons out of the cells slowly while nurturing the body's vitamins, minerals (salts), and enzymes. Fruit juices are electric and dynamizing, and they wash the tissues clean of toxins while providing stimulants for glycolysis, e.g., citric acids. Lemon and fully ripened limes are the most electric and anionic juices. Melons and melon juice tend to be in between.
Fasting (cleansing, detoxification) is one of the three phases of holistic nutrition; health optimization, maintenance or stabilizing, and building (nurturing, supplementing) are the other two. Fasting is the "missing link." Most people overeat, eat too often, and overeat food that is high-fat, over-processed animal protein, rich food, and oxidized fats, which contributes to overproduction and mucus congesting diet. Poor diet, mismanaged stress, and dehydration are contributing factors for obesity, diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. If we regularly eat a balanced and well-combined diet and skip meals occasionally when under stress, we will have less need for fasting.
Before fasting, it is best to determine the body's Toxic burdens, which are unique to each individual. Medical and dental researchers have linked drugs, unhealthy lifestyles, poor diets, and oral toxins such as decayed teeth, gum crevices, sinus and tonsil infections, and mucus membrane ulcers as contributing factors to many systemic inflammations. Our approach is to assess each client for their toxic signature and tailor programs specific to their fasting(detoxification) and health restoration needs.
